Frequently Asked Questions about FTP / SFTP

What is FTP and SFTP.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is the most commonly used method for web designers to transfer their pages from their hard drives, where they have been tested and double-checked, to the server for display. There are a number of applications for FTP.

SFTP is a secure form of FTP, that encrypts the login process and the files as they are transferred to and from the server. All FTP services will be eliminated in favor of SFTP to ensure maximum security in the near future.

What SFTP/FTP applications do you recommend?

SFTP: Preferred
We recommend F-Secure's SFTP client or the Secure client within newer versions of Macromedia's Dreamweaver.

FTP: Currently Allowed
We recommend Fetch for the Macintosh and WS_FTP for Windows.

Where can I get information on setting up and using Fetch?

Detailed instructions for setting up and using Fetch may be found by clicking on this HELP link

How do I get server access via FTP?

You need to contact Data Systems, Web Development at webmaster@som.tulane.edu. We will issue you a password and user ID and grant you access to a subdirectory. Please note that the website must be directly related to a Tulane University Medical Center or School of Medicine department, program, or student organization.

* No commercial activity is allowed on the SOM servers.

Please note that if you are requesting access to an already established site, we will need permission from the head of the department, program or organization via email or phone before we can grant you access.

What should I do if I forget my password?

Contact Data Systems, Web Development at webmaster@som.tulane.edu.

After uploading, I don't see the new files in my browser. What happened?

Well, could be any number of things.

Make sure you looking at your web page on http://dev.som.tulane.edu , it won't appear on http://www.som.tualne.edu until you make the request to put your updates on the main server by emailing webmaster@som.tulane.edu.

Trying reloading or refreshing your page in the browser - it may have a cached copy of the old page that's displaying rather than the new page.

Make sure that you replaced the old page with a new page with the exact same name - if the name isn't exactly the same, the new page will not replace the old page and links will still lead to the old page.

Last resort - well, does webmaster@som.tulane.edu sound familiar?

After uploading, I don't see the new images in my browser - all I get are these broken icons. What happened?

Usually this happens because you either forgot to send the images as well as the page (remember, the images are separate items and must be treated separately) or because, although the images were sent, they didn't end up where the pages expect them to be. Check (1) whether the images are in your folder on the server and (2) if they are, are they where they are supposed to be? If they're in a folder named "images" on your hard drive, they should be in a folder named "images" in your folder on the server. Last resort - refer to the email or phone number above.
