Q. What is the School of Medicine Web Server running on?
A. The webserver that runs the SOM site and all the virtual hosts is a Red Hat Linux server with Apache Webserver.

Q. Are the changes I make on my site immediately seen on the web?
A. Essentially yes. Sometimes it may take up to 10 seconds for the changes to be seen on your browser. This is just due to the caching that is running on the server to help keep the server moving along at a high rate of speed.

Q. Do we have AppleTalk access to modify our websites?
A. No. AppleTalk access was phased out a few years ago.

Q. Can we do a terminal login?
A. Yes, you can now use a SSH2 client to login and edit pages on the server. You can do so by using an SSH2 client to connect to dev.som.tulane.edu and using a text editor from your shell account. You can use the Un*x editors pico and vi. A SSH2 client terminal connection is similar to telnet, but all the information exchanged between the server and your machine is encrypted! We do not have Telnet access due to the security problems that it would cause for the server.

Q. What type of web page editor do you recommend?
A. We are hoping to get most of our active web developers to standardize on Macromedia's Dreamweaver, which is available for both Macs and Windows machines. You can download a trial at http://www.macromedia.com/dreamweaver, if you decide you would like to purchase the program be sure to contact the helpdesk at 862-8888 about getting on the Tulane Site License. Please do not use Microsoft's FrontPage (any version), since it does not generate standard HTML code and may prevent your web site from working correctly for your visitors.

Q. Where do I login to change my site?
A. In order to update your site you DO NOT try to connect to the www.som.tulane.edu address. Instead you log into the developer's server at dev.som.tulane.edu and make your changes there. Rest assured your changes will be reflected on the main website.

Q. Ok, I am trying to log into dev.som.tulane.edu but I can't get in. What's wrong?
A. If your new account has been setup and you are still having problems getting logged in email webmaster@som.tulane.edu and explain the situation.

Q. What is the way I should list my web page address, using www.tmc.tulane.edu or www.mcl.tulane.edu or www1.omi.tulane.edu or www.som.tulane.edu?
A. ALWAYS USE THE http://www.som.tulane.edu ADDRESS.

The mcl, omi, and tmc addresses all are aliases that point to the som address. Since this site is the School of Medicine site, the correct URL is http://www.som.tulane.edu/ and the others are just legacy addresses that will eventually be phased out.

Q. Are the www.tmc/www1.omi/www.mcl addresses going to stop working?
A. The plan is to take www.tmc.tulane.edu and point it to a web page that will have links to the School of Medicine, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and various other Tulane Medicine related links. This will be happening in the not too distant future, so make sure you update all your documents, business cards, and links to reflect this upcoming change. OMI's will disappear soon as well, MCL might be on the chopping block soon.

Q. Our department wants to have our own domain name or www.my_department.tulane.edu address or a .org/.com/.etc address. Do we need to set up our own site and take care of it ourselves?
A. No, and please don't do it on your own! Let us help you, it will make things go MUCH faster.

We host nearly 15 domains on our web servers, including:

http://www.canceriscurable.com, http://www.renalpathsoc.org, and http://www.lacarp.tulane.edu are just a few examples.

The worst thing you could do is take on the expense, hassle, and trouble of trying to run your own webserver. We are seasoned professionals with top of the line equipment, automated backups, a climate and access controlled server room, and a staff of other IT professionals to backup the two primary web admins. Our job is to provide you with any computing services you need, that is why we are here. That way you can concentrate on your job and we can concentrate on your computing needs!

Q: What about Active Server Pages? (Microsoft .asp files)
A. DO NOT USE THEM. These files are not only unnecessary, but are also specific to Microsoft. Please code your website in W3C Standard HTML. Active server pages are meant to be run on Microsoft IIS webservers, not on any other kind of webservers. They also do not display properly from one browser and/or platform to another.

Q. What other internet services do you offer?
A. We offer a lot more internet related services than most people are aware of, including:

Live Video/Audio Streaming over the internet We can setup a video feed from places on or (possibly) off campus and people can tune in over the internet to watch your event. All they need is the Apple QuickTime Player and an internet connection!
On-Demand Video/Audio Streaming over the internet Maybe you would like to record a seminar, and make it available for playback at any time later on via the internet? We can record, digitize, edit, and post your video on our video streaming server for viewing anytime via the internet. Check out the videos already available for on demand viewing: http://stream.hsc.tulane.edu
Wed Crossing Online Collaboration Server This is a website that you can configure via the web to allow users in your department, or anyone else to come in and have a real-time web chat, or post a question, or answer a posted question, or ... well, just give it a try! http://webx.hsc.tulane.edu (just click 'register')
E-commerce Server Need to sell some products for your department? We have our own web mall!
FTP Services Want to put some files up for download via FTP? We have the server for you.
Oracle Web Applications Looking to get a web-based database application running for your department, we have the developers and the servers.

Q: Who do I contact to get help with my web issues?
A. Good question. If you need a web site overhaul, a new site designed for your department, have questions about how to do something in HTML, are having problems with a page, or would like to set up a HTML training session you need to contact Tripp Frasch (tfrasch@tulane.edu) at 988-1144.

If you are interested in any of the other internet-related services that we offer or would like to setup a virtual host for your department you can email Joe Petrocy (jpetroc@tulane.edu).

Q. My question wasn't answered here on the SOM Web FAQ, who should I contact?
