Configuring and Using WS_FTP (for Windows)
You've already downloaded WS_FTP LE from http://download.com.com/3000-2160-10252208.html?tag=lst-0-5 and have installed it on your computer. Please note that this version is only for users at educational institutions; you may not use it if you are working on a commercial site.
You are now ready to configure the application so it works for you.

The first time you open your WS_FTP application, you will get a start-up screen that shows this window in front of another, larger window. Before you do anything else, you need to create a new profile that will automatically bring you to your directory on the TUMC server. Click on the "New" button to the right of the Profile Name. When the new profile opens, it will be blank. You need to fill in the fields as follows:

• Profile Name: May be anything that helps you recall this profile. I suggest "SOM Server" or "SOM Restricted Server", depending on which you will be sending pages to.
• Host Name/Address: If you're sending pages to the main SOM webserver, use "dev.som.tulane.edu". If you will be sending pages to the restricted server, login using your restricted user ID.
• Host Type: Leave as "Automatic Detect"
• User ID: Enter your User ID here. If you are not sure of your user ID, please contact our office.
• Password: Enter your password here. Please note that both the password and user ID fields are case sensitive, so be sure to use the correct case. You may click the "Save Password" box if nobody else ever uses your computer and you feel fairly safe; otherwise, we suggest that you enter your password each time you use WS_FTP.
• You may leave the account and comment fields blank.
Then, click on the "Startup" tab, second along the top. This will bring up a screen that allows you to configure the application so that when it connects to the server, it finds your pages in your directory on both your hard drive and the server automatically. This makes it much easier and faster to send and download pages.
The first field you need to fill out tells the application where your pages may be found on the server. This is usually a path such as "dev.som.tulane.edu/departments/neuroscience/". If you're not sure of the path, contact our offices.
The second field on this screen is the path to your pages on your C: drive. Before you open the WS_FTP application, it would be good to make sure that you have all your pages on your drive organized and in one location. Then determine the path to the location (usually something along the lines of "C:\Program Files\Web Pages\My Pages" or the like) and type that in exactly.

You are now done configuring your WS_FTP application.
To use WS_FTP, find the application under the "Programs" listing at the bottom left of your screen. If you will be using it a lot, I recommend that you place a short cut to it on your desktop. When it opens, click the "OK" button and it should connect you to the server. You will get a window that looks something like the following:

• You can double click on a file in the left (local) window and it will upload to the server.
• You can hold down your Control key and click (once) on multiple files to select, then click on the "-->" button to transfer them all at once.
• To download files from the server to your local drive, do the exact opposite - double click on files on the right side and they will transfer to the left. Or hold down the Control key to select multiple files and click on the "<--" to transfer them all at once.
• The "Refresh" button will show the new files on either side.
• You may highlight a file and click on the "Rename" button to rename it.
• You may also delete files from either your local drive or the server - please be very careful using this function - BE SURE that you want to delete the files you have highlighted before you click this button!
Remember that you need to send all associated files with a page - images are separate from the pages and need to be sent as well as the html files.
